What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health condition that usually interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions actively, react rationally, and make judgments practically.
The symptoms of schizophrenia include persistent delusion (fixed beliefs that something is true, despite evidence to the contrary), persistent hallucinations (hearing voices, seeing people or objects, smelling or feeling things others can’t), disorganized speech, thoughts, and behavior along with negative symptoms such as limited speech, limited emotional expression, and social withdrawal.
The symptoms of schizophrenia usually appear in late adolescence or early adulthood. Its impact on speech, thinking, emotions, and other areas of life can affect a person’s social interactions and everyday activities. It is uncommon for schizophrenia to be diagnosed in a person younger than 12 or older than 40. The earlier the disorder is detected, the better is the prognosis.
